Challenges of Poverty in Argentina Print E-mail

State of poverty in Buenos Aires

I got an email from our missionary Fr. Isidore M. Cypres, FI, the superior of our mission in Buenos Aires. I am in the process of translating it for publication for our site, but for the meantime, I can certainly say that it is a very moving description of the misery experienced by our missionaries. It is not not only a misery from material poverty of the people, but especially, spiritually: the pervasive lack of catechesis of the three villages they serve (consisting of roughly 40,000 population), the state of marriage outside the Church (for the past 8 years, there are only 60 couples married in the Church), the existence of poverty in their parish (the friars maintain two parishes) where they feed hungry people on a regular basis.

What needs to be done?

First and foremost the spiritual means of prayer and penance as well as our spiritual solidarity with our missionaries will certainly be the most important thing that can be done. With all modesty, the friars in Argentina expressed the immediate needs for the following:

1. The construction of walls surrounding the friary and the parish church to avoid getting flooded during heavy rain.

2. The construction of a plain building beside the Church where the friars live to put up at least twenty more rooms to accommodate other friars and young vocations to the Institute. The present canonical house of the friars can only accommodate five friars.

3. The construction of a simple shelter with rooms for catechesis and possibly a place for the sisters to live and help out in the mission.

4. Any material things and assistance to the poor villages especially in the village of La Salada.

5. They have a need for a photocopying machine for our apostolate.

How can you help?

Our mission in Buenos Aires is located in one of the poorest areas of the city with poor families in slums, drug addiction, wave of migration from other parts of Argentina. The friars accept any kind of help you can provide for them. If you are interested in helping them out, please contact Fr. Isidore M. Cypres by using the online form. If you are in the United States, you can contact the Franciscan Tertiary Handmaids of the Immaculate to learn more how you can help us.

If you wish to donate online please use the following options below. May God reward you for your help.
